Pick Me Up Theatre have won rave reviews for previous productions of Stephen Sondheim’s shows – Into The Woods at the Grand Opera House in 2014 and a summer season in 2016 featuring Assassins and Sweeney Todd.
Now Pick Me Up are staging Sondheim’s Follies – in the wake of the hit National Theatre show that confirmed its status as a true masterpiece.
In contrast to the huge scale of the London production, director Robert Readman is staging Follies in the intimate surroundings of the John Cooper Studio Theatre @41 Monkgate.
Audiences who attended the Sondheim summer season there will know the effect these pieces make when you’re up close and personal with the performers!
Follies focuses on two unhappily married couples attending a reunion for veteran performers of the Weismann’s Follies, a 30’s musical revue, in an old theatre that’s about to be demolished.
It intermingles past and present as we watch the characters reflect on what’s happened to their lives, haunted by the ghosts of their younger selves.
And it features some of Sondheim’s most memorable songs – from Broadway Baby to I’m Still Here; Too Many Mornings to Losing My Mind.
