Theatre@41 is York’s leading independent theatre. For 25 years, we have provided affordable, accessible space for classes, rehearsals, workshops and performances for both the local community and touring artists. 

Following changes to our governance structure, we are entering an exciting period of development and are seeking new trustees to join our charity’s Board, ideally with several years’ experience of one of the following:

• Arts Management - As a small but growing theatre, we’re looking for people with experience of management roles in arts organisations to provide insight and guidance into how we can work in line with industry best practice.

• Business Development - Can you use your experience of growing a business to help us develop Theatre@41 in a sustainable way that allows us to support more people to participate in the performing arts? 

• Fundraising - Whether its applying for grants, or helping us run a better bake sale - we’d love to meet someone with experience of fundraising for charities.

• Construction - Our theatre building is over 100 years old and needs regular maintenance as well as planning for longer-term renovations. If you’ve got experience in building or construction and can provide the insight we need, get in touch!

• Law - We’re looking for someone with a legal background who can advise on making sure we remain compliant with all necessary rules and legislation, now and in the future, so that people can continue to enjoy using our building and services with confidence.

• Technical theatre - The technical side of running our theatre is a crucial part of what we provide, and we want to bring someone with a range of industry experience onto our Board to advise on policy and equipment, and lead our brilliant team of technical volunteers.

 

This is a great opportunity to develop your experience as a trustee with a small, dynamic organisation and a proactive board, with the chance to make a real difference to our work and the services we provide.

​As an organisation led almost entirely by volunteers, our board is quite hands-on and you would be expected to lead on key areas of organisational development. The trustees currently meet on a monthly basis, with some work over digital channels and at the theatre in between these meetings. We are conscious that trustees are giving up their spare time so would have an open conversation with any potential appointee about what would be realistic in terms of commitment.

Our goal is to be representative of the community we work in and so we are keen to hear from candidates from a range of backgrounds, particularly those currently under-represented within the theatre industry. Due to the need for trustees to be present at the theatre from time to time, you should be based in or near York.
