I have had some of my most treasured  and memorable theatre experiences  @41 Monkgate both as a performer and an audience member. It is such a special place, so unique that I jumped at the chance to join the board and create even more special memories for everyone that comes into our amazing space.

Chair

Having chaired Theatre@41 for the last 3 years I have seen what can be achieved with intimate, flexible theatre spaces. Performances and experiences in Theatre@41 have endless possibilities. The space provides an opportunity for anyone from York (and beyond) to create bold and exciting performances where the audience are as close as you dare allow. I want to use my experience to help make Theatre@41 a vibrant and viable venue that provides an adaptable space for whatever takes your fancy.

I love the intimacy and infinite possibilities of Theatre@41.  A black box studio is perfect for companies to get creative - there is a very special atmosphere here which seems to encourage imagination. Some of the productions have been out of this world.  Here’s to many, many more.

I've been coming to this theatre for a number of years and amongst many other experiences have found myself defending the country with 'Dad's Army', hoping for a winner on 'Ladies' Day', wondering what was for dinner from the friend of 'Sweeney Todd', sweating in the steamy heat of South East Asia with 'Privates on Parade' and fighting, amongst other things, a legal battle in the law courts of old Bremen with 'Monster Makers'. So when I heard that they were looking for board members I knew that I had to help keep this wonderful black box of mystery going.

The John Cooper Studio is not only the most adaptable black box theatre space we have in York, but it is set in a building that offers three other workshop spaces! It is no wonder that, over the years, Theatre@41 has been the origin of such a fantastic array of performances and instrumental in sparking the careers of so many talented Yorkies. It’s a privilege to be a part of its future!

I have loved being a part of Theatre@41 since first discovering it with Pick Me Up during the Summer of Sondheim - my daughter was keen to get arty with make up so we both went and helped backstage.  I carried on doing hair and make up at Monkgate for several years until setting up York Gin.
My family and I get along to every production we can and my son goes to York Stage School as well as performing with Pick Me Up. Now I am lucky enough to be on the Board and we are working to ensure Theatre@41 continues to thrive and get the love it deserves.

Meet the Team@41

I am ecstatic to be a trustee for Theatre@41 and to contribute to one of the most exciting venues in York. It is a truly special theatre both as a place for show stopping performances and a community hub for upcoming artists. This space welcomed me in 2019 with York Settlement Community Players' The Red Shoes and it is a honour to give back to a venue that has given me so much. As a Deaf Director it gives me a lot of hope for York’s sparkling cultural landscape.

Having somewhere like Theatre@41 is really important for York, providing an affordable space for new performance and classes, and helping more people get involved with the performing arts. I'm pleased to have the opportunity to help Theatre@41 reach its potential.
